Current Commander, Gary Thompson, of the Delta County American Legion – Red Henderson Post 483 – has decided not to pursue the position for re-election. He will remain Post Commander until Wednesday, July 1, three days before America’s 250th celebration as a free nation.
Not to mention, he will be stepping down right before Delta County’s “First Annual Freedom Fest,” specifically dedicated to celebrating Independence Day as a community. One might say Commander Gary Thompson will be going out with a bang – in terms of celebrating a uniquely aligned resignation, to be so closely followed by an extra-special time for larger-than-life fireworks displays.
In a personal statement to his fellow members of Post 483, Thompson stated, “I just wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you for your loyalty and support over the last 14 years. You have made my job a pleasure and an honor over these last years. To all of you who showed up for any event, who helped to achieve the goals of the Post, and who just showed support over the years – THANK YOU – that truly means the world to me.”
Although stepping down as Commander, Thompson mentioned he will still be attending meetings “as able.”
“I have high hopes that Post 483 will continue to serve the community and its veterans,” stated Thompson.
“Best wishes to you all, Gary P. Thompson.”
Fellow Post members showed their gratitude and gave their respects in response.
“Thanks for all you have done, and God speed to you Gary,” responded Dewey Marsh.
“Thank you, Gary, for all of the years of service to our country and our Post. I hope to see our American Legion Post continue to thrive in the future,” stated D.D. Young.
“Many thanks for your years of service to the Veterans of Delta County…It sure does seem like our soon to be past officers are leaving the post better than they found it, and on a foundation for a strong future, and that is a great thing for any organization,” stated Scott Wizeman.
“Thank you for your service to our country and Post. It was a pleasure working with you and being a part of the organization under your leadership for all those years (11 of those years being your Adjutant.) You will be missed, but we’ll still be around. God bless you in the days ahead,” responded Diane Bossher.
